The Power of Electric Bike

Before the rampant distribution of Chinese electric bikes in the country, Innovatronix had pioneering the introduction of this kind of transportation. Aside from being an environment-friendly compare to having a motorbike this can be an alternate way in exercising.

In 1987, Ramon Castillo, a former senior engineer at Intel, left the manufacturing firm of computer components and integrated circuits, to put up Innovatronix, Inc. It is a fitting acronym for a company promising to engage in "innovative electronics" with Castillo as the engineer and one technician. For the first two years of operations, the company relied on projects from Intel, then to Motorola, Telefunken and later on to companies in other industries, like manufacturing and packaging.

The fact that Innovatronix was a small company and without a track record to boast did not become a hindrance to offer the products and services to industrial giants. These companies need Tronix services for productivity development. From this time on, sales picked up. Innovatronix has managed to increase its customer base through recommendations from its existing clients. Being the only Filipino firm experienced in making electronic displays, and Innovatronix was contracted to make the scoreboards for the Southeast Asian games held in Manila in November 1991. This big break became the starting point of bigger opportunities for Innovatronix..

From scoreboards, Innovatronix's TRONIX brand on consumer electronic products was launched. Up to this date, Innovatronix had reached Filipino household with its Power-on-Delay (POD10), electronic ballasts, AVRs and ACT20 for window-type air conditioners. In 1997, when the Asian financial crisis came, Innovatronix was resilient by venturing into another business concept. This was due to the advent of digital cameras. Castillo, also a photography hobbyist, established the Tronix Imaging Centers in 1998. It started in Farmers Plaza, Ever Ortigas and Pavilion Mall in Biñan, Laguna offering digital imaging services plus retail of Tronix brand of consumer electronics.

Over a few years, Innovatronix's network of outlets grew rapidly, covering the entire Metro Manila and nearby provinces. By 2006, Tronix Imaging Centers have scattered all over the country. It is one of the pioneers in the digital photo studio industry. Tronix Imaging Centers offer wide-range of digital imaging services.

Also in 2006, Innovatronix Inc launched its own brand of photo equipment products. This product line is now exported to over 80 countries worldwide. While it used to export assembled electronic parts during the 1990s but using its own brand started the leap for Innovatronix to start doing business in the global marketplace, proving that a once-small Filipino enterprise can rise up and win its own challenges.

In 2010, after years of continuous growth, Innovatronix Inc moved to its new office and manufacturing facility along Sumulong Highway, Antipolo City. The 3-storey building on a 50,000 sq ft lot is now housing its retail and export business units, product research & engineering and administrative offices.

E-trikes, the new king of the Philippine road

The conventional jeepney has transformed into a new image. E-Trikes are not new into the Philippine roads. It was already been introduced since 2008 when a couple started to realize the importance of a clean and safe environment. Edelweiss Villoria was so moved about the documentary of Former Vice-President Al Gore entitled “An Inconvenient Truth” that she keeps on urging her husband to do something of what they can contribute to the environment. And that was the time that Gerweiss Motors Corporation was conceived on November 2008.

Gerard Villoria, as the founder has focused on the production of Electric Vehicles. With just two years after its establishment, the company has received and manufactured around 300 units. They are now considered as the pioneer and leader of electric vehicles in the country.

Eco-friendly Bike from Bamboo

BAMBIKE (Bamb EcoLogical Technology Inc.) is a socio-ecological enterprise that hand-makes bamboo bicycles with fair-trade labor and sustainable building practices. Bambike builders come from Gawad Kalinga, a Philippine basedcommunity development organization for the poor, working to bring an end to poverty. They are also working on a bamboo nursery for reforestation and have plans for a reef rehabilitation project. Bambike is a companythat is interested in helping out people and the planet, dedicated to social and environmental stewardship. Their goal is to do better business and to make the greenest bikes on the planet.

The company, spearheaded by Bryan McClelland, is helping out people and the planet by “doing better business and [making] the most sustainable bikes in the world.” Bambike’s latest design (pictured above) features a custom-engineered triangular bamboo top tube, lime green pedals, and a Shimano Nexus internal 3-speed hub.

Bryan, a proud Filipino-American, started to ride a bike when he was 5 years old. When he was cruising down the hill behind the civic center where he learned on his little red bike, he never dreamed that one day he would building bikes, let alone making them out of bamboo. The idea came to him while he was working on his Masters of Environmental Resource Management at the University of Pennsylvania. His thesis was on sustainable community development in thePhilippines – working to create the environmental program, now known as Green Kalinga, for Gawad Kalinga. Bryan’s vision for Bambike is to build the greenest bikes on the planet, and to create as many jobs as possible for the people that need them the most.
